What a relief to discover that I can eat warm, heating RAW foods in winter. No more relying on chilly salads!
Great day, great food, more please!
Thank you for a practical, inspiring and delicious introduction to the real world of cuisine raw food. I feel much better equipped to greatly increase my nutrition in a way that I can easily weave into my life.
Very interesting and informative information given in an informal and easy to follow way. – The Raw Food Inspiration day opened my eyes to what is possible with raw food and has inspired me to try it for myself. Great to know that I can have warm raw food in the winter.
Having never heard of cuisine raw food before I am delighted to have found this wonderful event and sampled its culinary delights.
It is great to be able to prepare so much without having to buy specialist equipment. (like juicers and dehydrators) Most of the raw recipe books I’ve seen are American, so it really helps to have English recipes with readily available ingredients.
I have been released further away from the world of salads, as much as I love them….. they are cold! My mind and taste buds have now exploded into the world of yummy, warm and filling raw meals. It really was an incredibly delicious, surprising experience.
It is great to know I can add wonderful raw foods to my current cooked diet. The pasta sauce was so tasty, I can’t wait to try it out on my children.
I’ve known all about the benefits of raw food for years and even eaten raw for months at a time, but I always flounder in the winter. It is a joy to train with people who have learnt by their “mistakes” and have a wealth of experience to share in a nurturing way. Thank you.
Straight after the Raw Food Inspiration day I went home totally inspired, and my sceptical husband loves the nut cheese and Raw Angel Delight!
It was great to have recipes and written material to take away, so I could really absorb the gems of raw food wisdom in a relaxed way.
I loved the humour and enthusiasm with which Jay and Terry presented the day, in such a holistic and supportive way. Next I want to do the Life Dynamic Coaching course to begin to sort the rest of my life out!
The Raw Inspiration day was so much more than just about food. The concept that really caught my attentions is “There is no such thing as right and wrong. Simply choices with consequences!” This alone has transformed the way I look at how I make decisions around what I choose to eat.
As I am on such a restricted diet, due to wheat and dairy intolerance, I am so excited that I have greatly increased my repertoire in just one day.
Raw Food Inspiration!
In brief!!!
- It tastes delicious! Organic raw plant foods are full of wonderful flavours, but when they are cooked the flavours are changed and dulled.
- Enzymes digest our food for us and are essential for a healthy body. Living plant foods are full of enzymes. Heating food over 118 C begins to destroy enzymes, so the body has to use up its supply of enzymes to digest the cooked food. The body has enough enzyme reserve for a long and healthy life as a top up to all the enzymes in living foods. Unfortunately on a standard cooked diet the reserve runs our around the age of 27! At this point the body now has to put loads of its resources into digesting food. This means energy levels begin to drop, the immune system becomes under resourced and the body is not able to clean and regenerate itself so efficiently. Eating enzyme and nutrient rich living foods means the body can begin to recover and even reverse the onset of disease. Every time you eat living foods you reduce the pressure on your system and are helping it on the road to greater health.
- Our blood needs to be alkaline to function well. Raw plant foods are alkaline and support the human energy system as a whole (physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually) in feeling healthy and vibrant. Most cooked foods have an acid pH which puts the human system into a sluggish, toxic state that is not life enhancing. Dr. Robert Young uses the analogy of a fish tank: If a fish is sick the first thing you need to do is change its water. For humans our “water” is our blood, in which all our organs are “swimming” in, so to improve our health we need to consistently reduce the acidic input of cooked foods. By eating alkaline foods we will return our blood to a healthy balance. So every time you eat any living plant foods you are moving your body towards better health.
- Not only do living plant foods change the pH of the blood and provide all the enzymes that we need, but they allow the body to clean itself by replacing toxic cooked materials with fresh living building materials. The body needs raw fats, starches and protein as building blocks. When we cook these materials they change their chemistry and the body has to make do with substandard materials, leading to disease. If you give the body living plant foods, especially raw oil from organic plants such as avocados, olives, nuts and seeds, the body can replace the toxic fat and bring vibrancy back to the body.
- When acidic cooked foods enter our body our immune system rushes to produce mucous to protect the lining of our digestive system. Over time the lining of our colon and intestine becomes compacted with mucous which turns black and putrid and is called mucoid plaque. This mucoid plaque prevents the colon and intestines from functioning properly so we cannot absorb nutrition very easily and it becomes a place for parasites to thrive. The best way to cleanse ourselves of this mucoid plaque (which looks like a bicycle inner-tube when it comes out!) is to use an organic, raw herbal cleanse. We recommend the Ejuva Colon Cleanse. Released of this rubber-like coating the body can once again absorb more nutrients and eating living foods means the plaque doesn’t need to return.
- In order to build a strong, healthy house we would choose the highest quality raw materials, have them delivered in manageable amounts and then assemble the house. This is what nature offers the body in the form of raw plant ingredients. In order to build a strong structure the body needs raw materials, called amino acids, (which the body constructs into proteins) as building blocks which are bountiful in raw plants. Look at how strong and muscular gorillas, and elephants are! Terry Larter is a Personal Fitness Trainer who has experience as a semi-professional body-builder on a raw food diet. So if you eat a complete protein such as meat, dairy or soya it is like having a complete house delivered that cannot get through the gate way, which then needs to be completely dismantled! This requires a huge amount of effort which is why the body shuts down and we feel sleepy after cooked meals especially if they contain meat, dairy or soya. Living plant foods contain an abundance of amino acids which the body easily assimilates into protein. The time in our lives when we are growing the most and therefore need our highest level of protein is in the first six months of life. Human breast milk contains only 2 to 4 % protein!!!
- We all know about the comfort factor of foods!! So living raw foods need to nourish us emotionally. This is very easy when we make cuisine living foods. We already have all the skills necessary for preparing delicious meals, all we have to do is bring new awareness about how best to do it. It is similar to when we drive abroad, we have already have our driving skills, but we just need to apply them is a different way. To support ourselves on our journey to health it really helps if we have experienced people to talk to. Jay and Terry offer support in the form of Raw Food Inspiration Events one to one coaching sessions and telephone consultations and Life Coaching Courses. - One of the great things about the new generation of raw food chefs is that they have recognised that eating strawberries and salads is fine on warm sunny days, but in cold, damp climates we need warming raw foods that satisfy our need to feel cosy throughout the chilly months of the year. So now we can enjoy raw cuisine curries, pizza, pasta, chillies, soups etc as well as yummy puddings. Raw Food Inspiration Events are designed to show you how to add delicious raw cuisine dishes to your current diet. According to ancient Chinese and Asian traditions it is important in cooler climates to provide your body with warming foods so that the energy of the body doesn’t become “damp”. Raw cuisine meals are the answer to this and enable people to enjoy the wonderful benefits of living foods throughout the year.
- Part of the reason we over eat is because we are desperate for nutrition. Whatever size we are, including people who are obese, we are literally starving for nutrients! By eating organic and wild, living plant foods we deliver optimum nutrition and enzymes. As our blood becomes less acidic we begin to cleanse and remove mucoid plaque and therefore can absorb more nutrients. Consuming juice that you have just made from organic or wild vegetables, fruits and green leaves is a fantastic way to support your body. Appropriate supplementation is also very important, which Jay and Terry can offer advice on.
In brief!!
- Because it tastes better!
- It doesn’t contain toxic chemicals such as artificial fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, all of which places great strain on the body.
- It does contain much higher levels of balanced nutrients as it is grown in a nutrient rich soil. For a healthy body we need 93 different minerals. Artificial fertilizers often only contain 3, such as NPK which are all growth promoting minerals!
- Organic food is therefore excellent value for money.
- Growing organically is looking after the soil, animals, people and planet.
Hello!
Our names are Jay and Terry, we live in Dartmoor National Park, Devon, England where our six children and grandson love to come and visit. So who are we? Good question! Like everyone else, we are defining and redefining ourselves in every moment as we make choices, either consciously or unconsciously!
Professionally we are holistic practitioners offering Life Coaching and Parenting courses, one to one sessions and telephone consultations, Personal Fitness Training and Transformational Space Clearing. We run an organic B&B providing delicious raw food cuisine as well as cooked vegetarian and vegan meals. In the Funky Raw Magazine we are the resident “agony aunt” (and uncle!) We also have special living food events to inspire and help people integrate more living foods into their everyday lives. (see above) Terry is a singer songwriter and Jay is an artist. Our debut album is called Simple Joy.
There are many different kinds of life coaching. The life coaching that we offer is based on surfing the chaos of life with loving kindness towards ourselves and the rest of the planet. This means that we need to address how we parent ourselves and switch from surviving on adrenalin, to joyfully living on endorphins. We trained with William Bloom, author of the Endorphin Effect, Feeling Safe, and recently Solutions – The Holistic Manifesto. We have been inspired by many people, especially Neale Donald Walsh, author of the Conversations With God series.
Terry’s raw food journey began nearly 20 years ago when he was a semi-professional body builder. He was raw for a year and was at the peak of fitness, equivalent to an Olympic cross country skier. - Terry currently offers holistic Personal Fitness Training. - However, he became disillusioned with the emphasis on drugs and size at any cost, rather than health, so he stopped competing and trained down over a period of one year, reverting to a cooked vegetarian and vegan diet as eating raw food was such an isolated path at the time.
Since getting together in 1998 we enjoyed a fully organic, cooked diet, except for salads in the summer months. In 2001 we came across David Wolfe’s book and both felt an inner knowing that living foods were right for us. For the first 6 weeks we felt fantastic. Then, while we were doing a permaculture course at the Eco Forest Garden Project in Spain, Terry went into a full blown detox which lasted six weeks and took nearly two years to recover from! From this we learnt that we would never recommend switching suddenly to a fully raw diet from a mainly cooked one. Over the next eighteen months we varied our raw/cooked balance to hold off the unpleasant detox symptoms of nausea, diarrhoea, and raging itchy skin. Then David Wolfe, Shazzie and Natures First Law crew came to stay at our B&B and advised us to use raw coconut butter on our itching skin and do an Ejuva herbal colon cleanse, which included enemas. It worked like magic! For the past 18 months we have enjoyed a fully raw, organic cuisine diet.
We feel that the living food journey we are on enhances our lives in many ways. Our minds feel clearer, our energy levels have gone up, our sense of spiritual connection to life has increased, emotionally we feel more joy in our lives and since the second Ejuva colon cleanse our nutritional absorption has dramatically risen. This means that our weight increased to our ideal weight (we were under weight for the first couple of years on raw) and we eat much less than we used to. We also have a deeper respect and appreciation for our amazing bodies which survived on such an unhealthy diet for so many years! We recognise the massive amount of emotional issues that are connected with food, so we use our full life coaching skills and cuisine living foods to manage life’s challenges in a nurturing way.
Our lives and journey with living foods has been full of surprises, both wonderful and challenging! We feel that there is a real need for people to share open heartedly their dreams, fears, aspirations and questions about a living food lifestyle. Through our column in The Funky Raw Magazine we will offer a culture of support in a nurturing way with kind eyes, balance and humour.

- Drink at least a pint of warm spring water or filtered water when you first get up. This helps flush your kidneys and stimulate a bowel movement. Ideally, after half an hour, have another large glass of warm water with lemon juice in it, as this stimulates the liver.
- Dietary choices:
- If you need to eat in the mornings have light alkalising foods such as freshly made fruit juices/green juices, smoothies or fruit. Wait until after noon for more solid foods as the morning is a time when the body is detoxifying.
- Switch from using table salt to adding unrefined Atlantic grey sea salt to food, which is very high in essential minerals.
- Stop cooking with oils! Fry onions in a little water with a dash of organic shoyu sauce as it tastes much better and is a lot healthier. Instead of cooking with oils add extra virgin, first cold-pressed oils to meals AFTER they have been cooked. Add organic hemp and coconut oil to your diet as they contain nutrition that our bodies desperately need.
- Good quality supplements are recommended, including liquid B12, trace minerals by Biocare, and MSM powder by Higher Nature.
- Relax! Moment to moment find ways to connect to the things that you love in your life and really appreciate them. When was the last time you appreciated your lungs for working so well?! Or the farmers and distributors who provide your food? Or the rain for providing fresh water for all living things! When we begin to appreciate all the simple and wonderful things in our lives we feel more relaxed.
- Connect to Nature. Plants literally provide us with the air we breathe and when we walk amongst trees, flowers, gardens or even a dandelion growing out of a crack in a wall, we can experience their beauty. House plants are living things that help us connect to Nature.
- Start to detox your world by using chemical free products and eating organic food whenever you can. See Why Eat Organic?
- What ever you do in your life remember that the trials and tribulations present themselves to you are just part of the ever changing rich tapestry of life and that there is an entire cosmos of benevolence supporting you.
- Find a physical movement that you enjoy such as walking, dancing, yoga, martial arts, re-bounding etc. and include it as often as possible in your life. Even a 3 minute shake out in a toilet cubical at work can release tension and help you smile!
- Look with kind eyes upon yourself, no matter what you have just done or been thinking. We are all fallible and doing our best to survive with whatever has been in our lives so far! At any time we can choose to move beyond survival and start living. Life Dynamic Coaching can really help with this shift.
- Reduce the amount of TV, radio, internet and newspapers in your life and switch to more nourishing forms of entertainment! The media has a heavy focus on the drama and traumas in life, which creates fear and a sense of helplessness. In reality there are millions of positive things happening all the time and “the news” only forms a small part of what is happening in people’s lives.
- Choose to be with people who support you in making lifestyle choices that you know are great for you!
